In Macedonian, storytelling is deeply embedded in expressions, unique verb tenses, and a structure that resonates with both folklore and modern narratives. Let’s explore storytelling vocabulary and grammar using the classic tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs—Снежана и седумте џуџиња.

Setting the Scene

In Macedonian, the classic story opener often goes, „Си било еднаш…“ (Once upon a time…) or „Еднаш неодамна…“ (Once not so long ago…).

This introduction leads us to a unique feature of Macedonian storytelling: the undetermined past tense (минато неопределно време). This past tense is particularly useful for storytelling because it implies a tale recounted from memory, a story someone else has told us, or events we didn’t directly witness (reported speech).

Examples:

„Си била еднаш една принцеза која живеела во златен замок.“
(Once upon a time, there was a princess who lived in a golden castle.)

Минато неопределно (the undetermined past tense) is formed by combining the auxiliary verb „сум“ (to be) with the main verb ending in -л:

• Јас сум патувал – I have traveled
• Ти си патувал – You have traveled
• Тој патувал – He has traveled (Note: the auxiliary „сум“ is not used in the third person)
  
• Ние сме патувале – We have traveled
• Вие сте патувале – You have traveled
• Тие патувале – They have traveled (Note: the auxiliary „сум“ is not used in the third person)

Еден зимски ден, една кралица го боцнала прстот со иглата и три капки крв капнале на снегот. Тогаш, кралицата посакала да роди дете кое ќе биде бело како снегот и црвено како крвта. Поради тоа, на девојчето му дале име Снежана.
One winter day, a queen pricked her finger with a needle, and three drops of blood fell onto the snow. Then, the queen wished to have a child who would be as white as the snow and as red as the blood. Because of this, the girl was named Snow White.

Навистина, кралицата родила убаво женско бебе, но набргу таа починала. По една година, кралот се оженил за друга кралица, која била многу убава, но истовремено, таа била лоша и практикувала маѓепсништво. Новата кралица имала волшебно огледало, кое постојано го прашувала, кој е најубав на светот, а огледалото секогаш одговарало дека таа е најубавата.
Indeed, the queen gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, but soon after, she passed away. A year later, the king married another queen, who was very beautiful but, at the same time, was wicked and practiced witchcraft. The new queen had a magical mirror, which she would constantly ask, “Who is the most beautiful in the world?” and the mirror would always reply that she was the most beautiful.

Еден ден, кога Снежана пораснала, кралицата, како по обичај, му го поставила на огледалото истото прашање, но овојпат, тоа одговорило дека Снежана е најубава на светот. Обземена од завист, кралицата го викнала ловецот и му наредила да ја одведе Снежана во шумата и таму да ја убие, а како доказ да ѝ го донесе нејзиното срце.
One day, when Snow White had grown up, the queen, as usual, asked the mirror the same question. But this time, it answered that Snow White was the most beautiful in the world. Overcome with envy, the queen called the huntsman and ordered him to take Snow White into the forest and kill her there, bringing back her heart as proof.

Сепак, ловецот се смилувал и ја пуштил Снежана да побегне во шумата, а наместо неа, тој убил една дива свиња чие срце го однел како доказ за смртта на Снежана.
However, the huntsman took pity and let Snow White escape into the forest. Instead of her, he killed a wild boar and brought its heart back as proof of Snow White’s death.

Snow White wandered through the forest and came across a small cottage where seven dwarfs lived, who mined gold in the mountains. Thus, Snow White stayed to live with the dwarfs and took care of the household, while they advised her not to let any strangers into the house during their absence.

За тоа време, лошата кралица повторно го прашала огледалото, кој е најубав на светот, но тоа одговорило дека Снежана, која живее во шумата со џуџињата, е стопати поубава од неа. Затоа, таа се преправила во стара жена и отишла во шумата кај Снежана на која ѝ продала свилен појас. Кога Снежана сакала да го проба појасот, кралицата ја стегнала многу цврсто, така што Снежана го изгубила здивот и паднала на подот.
In the meantime, the wicked queen asked the mirror again who was the most beautiful in the world, but it replied that Snow White, who lived in the forest with the dwarfs, was a hundred times more beautiful than she was. Therefore, she disguised herself as an old woman and went into the forest to Snow White, selling her a silk belt. When Snow White tried to put on the belt, the queen tightened it so firmly that Snow White lost her breath and fell to the floor.

Џуџињата се вратиле дома, ја здогледале Снежана, го пресекле појасот и таа ја повратила свеста. По некое време, кралицата пак разбрала дека Снежана е жива, пак се преправила во стара жена и овојпат на Снежана ѝ продала отровен чешел, по што таа повторно се онесвестила. Сепак, и овојпат, џуџињата навреме се вратиле дома и го извлекле чешелот од косата на Снежана, така што таа ја повратила свеста.
The dwarfs returned home, saw Snow White, and cut the belt, allowing her to regain consciousness. After some time, the queen learned again that Snow White was alive, disguised herself as an old woman once more, and this time sold Snow White a poisoned comb. After using it, she fell unconscious again. However, once again, the dwarfs returned home just in time and removed the comb from Snow White’s hair, after which she regained consciousness.

Овојпат, џуџињата биле немоќни да ја спасат, но восхитени од нејзината убавина, не сакале да ја закопаат во земјата, туку направиле стаклен ковчег што го оставиле на врвот од ридот. По некое време, еден принц поминал низ шумата и го видел ковчегот. Восхитен од убавината на Снежана, тој побарал од џуџињата да му ја дадат мртвата Снежана, ветувајќи дека добро ќе се грижи за неа. Додека неговите слуги го носеле ковчегот, тој се затресол и парчето од отровното јаболко, кое било заглавено во грлото на Снежана, испаднало по што таа оживеала.
This time, the dwarfs were powerless to save her, but captivated by her beauty, they did not want to bury her in the ground. Instead, they made a glass coffin and placed it on top of a hill. After some time, a prince passed through the forest and saw the coffin. Enchanted by Snow White’s beauty, he asked the dwarfs to give him the dead Snow White, promising to take good care of her. As his servants carried the coffin, it jolted, and a piece of the poisoned apple that had been lodged in Snow White’s throat fell out, allowing her to come back to life.
