One of the most commonly used words in Macedonian that often confuses learners is ‘веќе’. While it may seem simple, it has a variety of meanings and uses that can express subtle differences in time, emotion, and emphasis. In this post, we’ll dive into how to use ‘веќе’ correctly in different contexts with clear examples.
‘Веќе’ as “Already”
Use ‘веќе’ to express that something has already happened or is happening.
- Веќе две години работам тука. (I’ve been working here for two years already.)
- Веќе е доцна. (It’s already late.)
Now / Finally
When you’re relieved or finally able to do something, ‘веќе’ emphasizes the change. When paired with сега (now), it emphasizes the present moment in relation to something that has recently changed.
- Сега веќе можам да зборувам! (Now I can speak!)
- Сега веќе добро вози. (Now, he/she drives well.)
Enough! (when used with emotion)
When you’re done with something or frustrated, ‘веќе’ shows your impatience.
- Доста веќе! (Enough already!)
Anymore
- Нема веќе да одам таму. (I’m not going there anymore.)
Belittling or sarcastic emphasis
Веќе, ти си најдобар. (Yeah, you’re the best)
As you can see, веќе is a small word with big potential. It can express time, change, finality, or even sarcasm, making it an essential word in everyday Macedonian conversation. Practice using веќе in different contexts and soon it’ll become second nature!
