Still haven’t started your New Year’s resolutions? Don’t worry—you can begin today, according to the Macedonian traditional calendar! 😉
Today, January 14th, marks the first day of the year on the Old Orthodox Julian Calendar, celebrated as Стара Нова година / Stara Nova godina (Old New Year) in Macedonia!
Even though we follow the Gregorian calendar for everyday life, traditionally and religiously, Macedonians stick to the Julian calendar.
Why January 14th is special
This day is also known as Василица / Vasilica (St. Basil’s Day) and is celebrated with a community gathering.
On January 13th, some families and neighborhoods light a bonfire, share food, drink, and enjoy traditional Macedonian music.
Another fun tradition: some families bake погача / pogacha (traditional bread) with a coin hidden inside on Vasilica! The person who finds the coin is believed to have good luck for the rest of the year. 🍀 This custom is also observed by many families on Бадник / Badnik (Christmas Eve).
In places like Вевчани / Vevčani, people celebrate with a carnival, dressing in masks and costumes to honor Свети Василиј / Sveti Vasilij (St. Basil). It’s one of the most colorful, lively events in Macedonia, bringing together people of all ages. Macedonian humor is often present during the carnival, with satirical and social or political critiques expressed through parody, adding a playful yet thought-provoking element to the celebrations.
